Digital Citizenship – Primary School Focus

Today we ask participants to identify how you deal with digital citizenship in a primary setting? What is the divide between what happens at home and school?

We look forward to reading your comments. Tomorrow we will shift the focus to the secondary school setting.

  2. Some questions for discussion ..
    Given the prevalence of and access to ICT and social media, when would be the ideal or essential stage for raising student awareness of the concept and importance of digital citizenship?
    How closely should parents be involved in this? Or is this wholly a school responsibility?

  3. In the ideal world, I think that introducing primary students to the concept of digital citizenship would be a joint responsibility of parents and the school. Perhaps primary teacher librarians could be proactive in either organizing or participating in parent information sessions about digital citizenship. The question of when to raise student awareness is much more difficult as there would be many variables to consider. It would be essential for each school to have a policy about digital citizenship that would include the best time as well as the method for doing this. This policy would take into consideration local circumstances and be specific to that school community.

  4. I agree with Sandra that in the ideal world it would be a partnership of parents and schools. However, how many current day parents themselves know how to be good digital citizens? Schools must take some responsibility in educating both students and parents, especially if access to varied digital resources is part of the curriculum.

  5. In our school, where primary students have their own device, the habits they develop at this age will stay with them. I believe that the school has a big role in working with the parents to alert them to issues they may not have considered so that it becomes a partnership – a shared conversation. We want our kids walking confidently (and respectfully) in their digital environment.

  6. I agree with Jill and Catherine… Parents themselves may not be good digital citizens, and it is the school’s task to make parents aware of a partnership in training young ones towards digital responsibility.
    Our school has many links on the library website for parents to use with their children to teach proper digital habits, through games, vdeos, tutorials, etc. The onus is on the school to alert parents to these links, and also on parents to make time to use them.
    As I’m not in Australia I can only contribute that which is done at the school I’m at – iPads are issued to students from Yr 4, so that technology use is incorporated across the curriculum. In library lessons we are to train students on digital citizenship, stepwise, from beginning stages to graduation. (The school is a new school, KG to Yr 12). However, we find that the full curriculum induces teachers to skip library lessons.
    Our behaviour should therefore mirror our talk; every opportunity we have to educate must be approached with dynamic demonstration for lasting impact.

  7. I think the most important lesson for children to learn and to have reinforced at all ages is that their digital citizenship behaviour is three pronged – personal, social and professional. They need to learn the appropriate behaviour for long term best practice in each element

  8. My site is a combined site – so my role as a teacher librarian means that for the primary students they are presented with weekly information literacy lessons which always includes digital citizenship information.
